ABOUT CANDLELIGHTERS FOR CHILDREN WITH CANCER

Founded in 1977, Candlelighters For Children With Cancer is an Oregon based non-profit that supports the whole family when a child is diagnosed with cancer. Programs include family events, affinity groups, scholarships, emergency financial assistance, in-hospital support, and a range of other activities free of charge. Our statewide chapters offer family support services throughout Oregon and SW Washington.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

Part-time, unpaid internship, 10-15 hours/week, starting in September

WORK SCHEDULE

Hybrid work schedule, preferably in-person 2-3 days/week

POSITION SUMMARY

This position reports to the Marketing & Communications Associate and supports marketing and fundraising initiatives for Candlelighters For Children With Cancer. The Marketing & Communications Intern will gain experience in a variety of marketing and communication roles, including copywriting, graphic design, storytelling, and the planning and executing of various fundraising and programmatic campaigns. The Marketing & Communications Intern will also assist at Candlelighters' various family and fundraising events and perform administrative & organizational tasks at our Beaverton headquarters.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

COPYWRITING (50%)

  • Create blog post content for the Candlelighters website and social media pages, spotlighting our families, volunteers, and supporters
  • Write content for our donor and family newsletters
  • Assist in writing press releases to raise awareness for Candlelighters

ADMINISTRATIVE & EVENT (20%)

  • Organization of assets on Google Drive and Canva
  • Assist with general organizational tasks in the Candlelighters office
  • Attend Candlelighters' family and fundraising events. Assist with set-up, serve food, host activities, interact with families, and more

SOCIAL MEDIA (15%)

  • Create content to leverage across multiple social media platforms, including but not limited to: posts, carousels, short-form videos, stories
  • Help with posting as needed using Meta Business Suite
  • Work with the Marketing & Communications Associate to come up with ideas and marketing campaigns to engage our audience

GRAPHIC DESIGN (10%)

  • Create and design both digital and print collateral for Candlelighters activities and events
  • Create social media posts consistent with brand
  • Graphic design assistance for email campaigns through Constant Contact

PHOTO DATABASE MANAGEMENT (5%)

  • Collect and organize photos from family activities and events
  • Scan and organize archival photos
  • Post to Flickr

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have strong writing and design skills and a proven ability to be detailed-oriented, organized, resourceful and creative. An interest and experience in nonprofit organizations is preferred.

  • Degree or currently pursuing a degree in Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, or another relevant subject
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience writing blog posts, press releases, or other similar content
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace
  • Experience with Canva or another design software
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative on projects

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Prior experience in marketing and communications
  • Social media experience and understanding of platforms like HootSuite and Meta Business Suite
  • Experience using email marketing platforms such as Constant Contact and Mailchimp
  • Experience creating short-form video content
  • Understanding of SEO and Google Analytics
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English
