Position Description

The University of Iowa Department of Anesthesia is seeking a motivated Research Intern to support ongoing research projects in Dr. Detlef Obal's laboratory. This position offers the opportunity to work in a high-quality academic medical center and gain hands-on experience in cardiovascular and translational research, including work with human cell models and molecular techniques. The Research Intern will function as part of an interdisciplinary research team and work closely with the principal investigator, research staff, and collaborators. The role involves supporting laboratory-based research while developing foundational skills in experimental design, data collection, and scientific analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Participate as a member of the interdisciplinary research team supporting Dr. Obal's lab
  • Assist with laboratory-based experiments, including human cell culture and molecular biology techniques
  • Support induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) culture and differentiation experiments, as appropriate
  • Collect, record, and organize experimental data while maintaining accurate and detailed laboratory records
  • Read and understand research protocols and assist with carrying out study procedures under supervision
  • Assist with analysis and interpretation of experimental results
  • Review scientific literature to support ongoing research projects
  • Help prepare materials for presentations, reports, and publications as needed
  • Assist with general lab operations, including maintaining supplies, organizing workspace, and supporting safety compliance
  • Communicate regularly with the principal investigator and research staff regarding project progress
  • Maintain competency in laboratory techniques, equipment, and data systems
  • Maintain professional and effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and collaborators
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check. This position is not eligible for University sponsorship for employment authorization.

Education Requirement

Bachelor's degree in a related scientific field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience

Required Qualifications

  • General understanding of scientific principles and ability to apply them in a research setting
  • Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records of experiments and outcomes
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Basic computer proficiency and willingness to learn scientific software and databases
  • Ability to work with general supervision and meet deadlines

Desirable Qualifications

  • Coursework or experience in molecular biology, physiology, or a related discipline
  • Exposure to cell culture techniques or basic laboratory methods (e.g., PCR, gel electrophoresis)
  • Interest in cardiovascular, translational, or cell-based research
  • Demonstrated initiative and willingness to learn new technical skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong communication skills
