Department Summary:

The Software Engineering Platforms & Infrastructure department develops and sustains modern software platforms and infrastructure that help MITRE teams deliver mission capabilities. Returning software developer interns work across the software development lifecycle, building web applications, integrating cloud services and data pipelines, and applying modern AI/ML tools alongside a collaborative, multi-disciplined team.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of full-stack web applications.
  • Assist with building and integrating APIs, services, and data sources across cloud and on-premise environments.
  • Write clean, well-tested code using languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Learn and apply modern development practices and tools, including source control, automated testing, cloud services, containers, databases, and appropriate AI/ML tools.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, and stakeholders in an Agile environment to deliver sponsor-focused solutions.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Prior software development experience through coursework, projects, or internships.
  • Must be enrolled full-time in an accredited degree-seeking program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, and continue to be enrolled the semester following the internship.
  • Working knowledge of at least one programming language, such as Python, Java, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
  • Prior experience as an intern at MITRE in the last 12 months.
  • This position has an on-site requirement of 3 days a week minimum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience building web applications or APIs using a modern framework.
  • Familiarity with Git and collaborative Agile development.
  • Exposure to cloud services, containers, or databases.
  • Interest in applying AI/ML tools or working with data-intensive applications.
  • Interest in public-service or mission-focused work.

Clearance: In addition to passing MITRE’s employment background check, you may be submitted for a U.S. Government Security clearance.  This is determined by the Department of Defense’s adjudicative guidelines for receiving a clearance, to include U.S. citizenship.  Other jobs may require vetting for various levels of agency public trust, fitness, suitability, controlled access, and special programs access determination consistent with the work program to which you are assigned.

Salary compensation range and midpoint:

$46,500 - $58,000 - $69,500 Annual
