Part-Time Studio Intern — Unpaid Internship
Role Summary New Apostle Gallery is currently seeking a part-time intern to participate in our artist studio practice. This is an unpaid, hands-on learning opportunity for individuals interested in gaining practical experience in contemporary art while working directly with artist and gallery owner David Hollier. The internship provides exposure to the day-to-day practice of a working artist and gallery and offers practical experience in different stages of artistic production, preparation, exhibition, and installation.
Through direct mentorship, interns will have opportunities to develop basic fine-art and studio skills while learning about the professional practices involved in producing, preparing, exhibiting, and presenting contemporary artwork. A successful intern will be curious, reliable, engaged, and willing to learn, while gradually developing practical studio skills, organization, teamwork, and an understanding of professional studio practices.
Responsibilities & Learning Opportunities Depending on current studio projects, interns may have opportunities to: Learn how to make and prepare stretchers, boards, and frames Learn techniques for stretching and preparing canvases Assist with and observe ongoing artwork and studio projects Gain experience with preparations for exhibitions and art fairs Assist with murals, street-art commissions, and other special projects when available Learn appropriate methods for preparing and packaging artwork Assist with exhibition and installation preparation Learn how to maintain an organized and functional working studio Become familiar with professional studio practices and protocols Work collaboratively with the artist and other members of the New Apostle Gallery team Location & Schedule The internship is based at New Apostle Gallery's studio in Hopewell Junction, New York, near Beacon. Interns are responsible for transportation to and from the studio/gallery. Transportation expenses for internship activities or projects requiring travel outside the regular studio/gallery location will be subsidized.
Internships are generally offered for a period of one to three months, with an expected commitment of approximately 8–16 hours per week. The schedule can be arranged based on the intern's availability and current studio activities. Placements may be extended by mutual agreement.
Qualifications Applicants from any field of study are welcome, and no previous professional art experience or specific qualifications are required. Students, recent graduates, and individuals interested in learning more about contemporary art and studio practice are encouraged to apply. Ideal candidates should be: Reliable, responsible, and committed Organized and able to follow instructions Comfortable working independently as well as collaboratively Willing and enthusiastic about learning practical studio skills and techniques Interested in fine art and the contemporary art world Able to travel reliably to the Hopewell Junction studio
Compensation This is an unpaid educational internship focused on mentorship, practical learning, and exposure to the working environment of a professional artist and gallery.
