As a State & Local Tax Intern at Baker Tilly (BT), you will deliver tax advisory and compliance services to clients. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Gain hands-on experience in state and local taxation
  • Maintain and expand knowledge base in the multi-state tax area by working on various projects including, but not limited to, conducting research and preparing memorandum on SALT issues (for individuals, corporations, and flow-through entities), assisting in M&A due diligence, voluntary disclosure programs, and various compliance matters
  • Experience projects involving sales and use taxes, realty transfer taxes, income / franchise taxes, gross receipts taxes, real and personal property taxes, excise taxes, taxes imposed on local level, and unclaimed property
  • Assist with addressing issues and questions for internal clients and potential prospects
  • Participate in our intern orientation, technical training and development program designed to provide the tools needed to contribute to client engagements
  • Experience on-the-job training through real work engagements, showcasing how your academic experience translates to the professional environment
  • Learn directly from experienced associates, seniors, managers and partners with specialized experience and technical knowledge across numerous industries and services
  • Build friendships and strong work relationships while gaining valuable experience
  • Demonstrate your performance and ability to join Baker Tilly as a full-time associate

Education

  • Currently enrolled or pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree program in Accounting or a related business discipline from an accredited institution. JD/LLM preferred.
  • Must have at least one academic term remaining following completion of the internship.

Experience

No prior professional experience is required. Previous internship, academic, leadership, volunteer, customer service, or other relevant experience and demonstrated interest in accounting, or professional services are preferred.

Certifications / Licensure

Required:

  • On track to meet the educational requirements for CPA exam eligibility and/or Bar exam prior to the start of a full-time Associate position.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer-sponsored visa sponsorship, now or in the future.
  • A resume and unofficial transcript(s) are required as part of the application process.
  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age.

Knowledge & Technical Skills

  • Foundational accounting knowledge developed through academic coursework preferred.
  • Ability to conduct basic research, analyze information, and document findings clearly and accurately.
  • Openness to learning emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools, responsibly to support learning, efficiency, and problem solving.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Actual compensation is influenced by a variety of relevant factors including but not limited to applicant's skills, prior experience, qualifications, degrees, professional certifications, work arrangements and geographic location. In Seattle, WA: pay rate range is $28.75 to $96.60

In California: pay rate range is $27.50 to $109.20

In Denver, CO: pay rate range is $27.50 to $92.40

In New York City: pay rate range is $31.25 to $105.00

In Chicago, IL: pay rate range is $27.50 to $92.40

In Tewksbury, MA: pay rate range is $28.75 to $96.60

The national pay rate range is $25.00 to $84.00
