Chairman Internship Details
An internship in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Office of Chairman James E. Risch offers a variety of opportunities to learn about foreign policy in Congress, the legislative and committee process, and the operations of an office on Capitol Hill. Interns are tasked with supporting office operations and assisting staff with their policy work.
Some of these responsibilities include:
- Attending briefings and writing summaries
- Preparing daily news clips
- Conducting research on policy and legislative issues
- Managing office correspondence and legislative documents
- Preparing hearing and meeting materials
Qualified candidates should have:
- Background knowledge of current and historical foreign policy issues
- A good understanding of the legislative process
- Strong reading, writing, and research skills, and attention to detail in formatting and proofreading
- Proficiency with the basic features of Microsoft Word and Excel, and familiarity with Windows file systems and using online databases
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively on team projects

- Internships take place in person in our Washington, D.C. office. We do not offer virtual internships.
- Internships are full-time: Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. while the Senate is in session, and 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. during recess. We do not offer part-time internships; however, accommodations may be made for interns who need to be excused for a limited number of hours each week.
- Internships are unpaid, and we do not provide any financial compensation or a stipend.
