How to write an internship resume

You don't need work experience to write a strong internship resume. You need to show relevant ability and make it easy to read. These five things do most of the work:

   Lead with education, then projects. Your degree, coursework, and projects are your strongest evidence. Put your education near the top and give real projects their own section with the same treatment you'd give a job.

   Put "Intern" in the title line. Some applicant tracking systems only register internship experience when the word "Intern" appears in the role title. Write "Marketing Intern," not "Marketing," and keep the entry inside your main Experience section.

   Write three to four bullets per role, each with a result. Start with a verb and end on an outcome: what changed, by how much, for whom. "Rebuilt the weekly inventory sheet, cutting restock errors 22%" beats "Responsible for inventory."

   Match the post's language. Pull the exact skills and tools from the internships you're targeting and use those words where they're true for you. If the posting says "SQL" and "stakeholder communication," those are the terms the ATS and the recruiter are scanning for.

   Keep the format ATS-safe. One column, standard headings, month-and-year dates on both sides of every role, no text boxes or images, and a .pdf or .docx export. Clean beats clever.

Writing an internship resume with no experience

Almost everyone applying for their first internship is in the same spot. Recruiters are reading for potential, not a career history. Build a resume around what you do have.

A projects section carries the most weight: a class project, a hackathon, a club you helped run, or something you built on your own, each written up with the same result-first bullets you'd use for a job.

Coursework signals the specific skills a company is looking for. Part-time or campus work shows reliability and transferable skill. A cashier who reconciled a register every night is showing the accuracy a finance team wants.
