Description:

Grade and assist the professor as needed, this may include: grading papers, classroom assistance, lab prep and/or lab demonstrations. May also be required to host group study sessions. The TA may assist with course-related field trips as a driver and/or co-leader, course-related planning and logistics, grading, and maintaining program equipment. Along with other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:

Both

  • Onboard and mentor new Graders and Classroom Assistants, ensuring they understand departmental standards and workflows.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for student employees regarding scheduling, procedural questions, and troubleshooting.
  • Assist the professor in delegating tasks among the student assistant team to ensure balanced workloads.
  • Conduct periodic quality checks on grading consistency across the assistant team.

Grader:

  • Oversee the grading pipeline to ensure all assignments, papers, and exams meet professor-provided rubrics and deadlines.
  • Audit grade entries in Canvas/Excel for accuracy and completeness.
  • Synthesize student progress data to provide the professor with high-level summaries of common student struggles or grading trends.
  • Handle complex or escalated grading inquiries from students before bringing them to the professor.

Classroom Assistant:

  • Coordinate the schedule for lab setups, classroom prep, and equipment maintenance.
  • Develop training guides or checklists for lab experiments and equipment handling.
  • Lead high-level study sessions and coordinate the schedule for other assistants' help sessions.
  • Oversee logistics for course-related field trips, ensuring drivers and co-leaders are prepared.
  • Ensure program equipment is inventoried and report any maintenance needs to the department.

Qualifications:

  • Must have at least one (1) full semester of experience as a Classroom Assistant or Grader (or equivalent experience determined by the Department).
  • Must have successfully completed required courses with a satisfactory grade; maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be in good standing with the university.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, organize team tasks, and provide constructive feedback to peers.
  • Advanced knowledge of Canvas, Excel, and specific lab equipment/software relevant to the department.
  • Proven track record of meeting deadlines and maintaining confidentiality regarding student records.
