Clinical Internship Program

Learn Couples Therapy by Doing Couples Therapy.

Graduate training teaches you how to conceptualize therapy. Internship is where you begin learning how to sit in the room and actually do it. At Semillas, interns develop experience working with individuals, couples, and families while receiving close supervision and opportunities to deepen their skills in relationship-focused therapy. We’re proud to partner with local graduate programs in preparing the next generation of clinicians, and have welcomed interns from Adler University, Northeastern Illinois University, The Family Institute at Northwestern University, and The Chicago School of Professional Psychology.

Our goal is not simply to help interns accumulate clinical hours. We want emerging therapists to become more confident identifying relational patterns, tolerating difficult moments, using themselves effectively in the therapeutic relationship, and developing their own clinical voice.

Counselors in Training

Every year, Semillas provides clinical training for master level interns from local universities.

Our counselors in training provide counseling services for individuals, couples and families. Appointments are offered at our North Center and Downtown locations and through our secure patient portal.

Why train with us?

Internship Program Details:

• Gain enhanced clinical experience by co-facilitating counseling sessions with a supervisor when clinically appropriate.
• Interns provide psychotherapy services to couples, families and individuals over the age of 16.
• Have an enhanced training opportunity, co-facilitating counseling sessions with their supervisor.
• Receive weekly individual and group supervision focused on case conceptualization, intervention, use of self, ethics, and professional development.
• Gain experience providing both in-person and telehealth counseling services.

Practicum and Internship Program Requirements:

· Candidate must be a master-level graduate student of clinical mental health counseling or family counseling and concurrently in their practicum or internship seminar

· Candidate must be available to be onsite three (3) days per week, for at least twelve (12) months

· Internships begin in the Summer prior to the fall term or January at the beginning of the spring term.

· Placement will be at one of our two locations for all your sessions, including telehealth sessions:

When is the deadline to apply to for the internship?

*Generally our application deadline for Fall practicum and internship is March 1st. Students with an alternate start date are encouraged to apply at least 6 months prior to their start date.*

When can I expect to hear whether or not my application was accepted?

*We receive many applicants each year. Applicants will hear from our team after applying if they are selected to move forward in the interview process.*

When does the internship begin?

*Typically internships generally start August 1 and complete July 31*

Can I apply as a first- or second-year master level student? Or do I have to wait until my final year?

*Candidates should apply on the practicum and internship schedule of their school*

How many clients will I be seeing per week?

*Interns will see 12-15 clients per week*

Do you accept interns in the middle of the fall or spring terms?

*Special consideration is provided for interns with an alternative placement schedule.*
