Overview: Are you interested in nonprofit law and advocacy? Join Save The Bay's policy staff to learn more about coastal governance related to coastal management. Interns will perform research tasks and investigate Rhode Island state laws and regulations, municipal ordinances, and other relevant state policies. Interns will communicate their ideas through written briefings and perform data analysis relating to coastal access.

Location:Save The Bay Center in Providence, RI

Time Commitment:Approximately January-May, 10 hours/week. At least 1-2 days on-site during work hours (Monday-Friday, 10am-3pm) in-person at our Providence office is preferred. Some remote work is available.

Deadline:December 3. Rolling interviews/acceptance after this date, though priority will be given to applications received by the December 3 deadline. Decisions will be made by January 22, 2027.

Responsibilities & Learning Opportunities

• Research and analyze state law, regulation, and policies, and municipal ordinances.
• Conduct literature review and research on environmental policy related to areas such as coastal management and shoreline access.
• Cultivate effective communication of thoughtful ideas on contemporary and challenging issues in our marine and coastal environments. Develop strategies inclusive of varied and diverse viewpoints.
• Access and examine public government records, including Rhode Island Geographic Information System (RIGIS) and other geographically-referenced datasets.
• Data assembly and analysis to identify trends in human impacts and uses of the coastal zone and nearshore ecosystems.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate juniors and seniors, recent graduates, grad students, and beginning professionals
• Interested in learning about environmental regulation and governance related to coastal management
• Must be well-organized, diligent, and reliable
• Personal transportation (ex. car) is a plus, but not required
