Job Summary/Basic Function
Weber State University’s Concept Center is seeking student engineering interns to support three CAMP Lite projects related to aircraft sustainment, manufacturing process improvement, and engineering procurement. Interns will work with Concept Center engineering staff on one or more of the following projects, depending on skills and project needs:
- Engineering Internship;
- Aircraft Skin Sanding Process Improvement – Document the existing aircraft skin sanding/buffing process, including baseline cycle time, operator effort, tool handling, and dust-management considerations. – Evaluate commercially available zero-gravity arms or tool balancers and assist with CAD design, fabrication, and assembly of sanding-tool mounting fixtures and adapters. – Help conduct controlled prototype testing and compare ergonomics, cycle time, tool positioning, dust collection, surface quality, and potential substrate damage.
- Ultra-Short-Pulse (USP) Laser / 3arm Integration – Measure and document equipment interfaces, mounting geometry, clearances, and range of motion for a sponsor-provided USP laser and 3arm mechanical assistance device. – Design and fabricate mounting brackets, adapters, cable/hose guides, strain relief, and umbilical-management hardware. – Assist with proof-of-concept assembly, supervised testing, performance documentation, and limited prototype refinement in the Concept Center High Bay Laboratory.
- Palladyne Robotic Sander Procurement Engineering – Help develop measurable functional requirements and maintain a requirements- traceability matrix for a proposed robotic sanding system. – Support review of the vendor-prepared Detailed Design Specification (DDS) against approved requirements. – Assist with technical documentation for Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), including procedures, checklists, acceptance criteria, and record templates. This assignment focuses on documentation, not robot installation or programming.
General responsibilities
- Create CAD models, drawings, calculations, prototypes, test plans, data summaries, and engineering reports as assigned.
- Participate in design reviews, report progress, communicate with the project team, and help present results to sponsors.
- Follow required laboratory safety training, supervision, and applicable sponsor/university information-handling procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
This is a pooled position. Applicants may be considered for one or more project assignments as positions become available. The applicant pool may expire, at which time applicants will be notified.
