Data Science Intern – Generative AI
About the role
About The Energy Authority
The Energy Authority is a public power-owned, nonprofit corporation with offices in Jacksonville, Florida, and Bellevue (Seattle), Washington. TEA provides public power utilities with access to advanced resources and technology systems so they can respond competitively in the changing energy markets. Through partnership with TEA, utilities benefit from an experienced organization that is singularly focused on deriving the maximum value of their assets from the market.
Join Our Team as a Data Science Intern – Generative AI!
Are you excited by what large language models can do, and curious about how to make them genuinely useful inside a real business? Do you enjoy turning messy, manual processes into clean, automated workflows? If you're looking for an internship where you'll build and ship real tools—not just prototypes that sit on a shelf—this opportunity is for you.
At The Energy Authority (TEA), our interns are treated as valued members of the team. As a Data Science Intern – Generative AI, you'll join TEA's Corporate Analytics team and use GenAI to improve how we work. You'll add context and interpretability to our existing analytics tools, help stakeholders make faster and better-informed decisions, automate and structure our processes, and make it easier for knowledge to flow across teams. Along the way, you'll learn how energy markets work and how data science drives decisions for public power utilities across the country.
To maximize your learning and project ownership, interns must be available for a minimum commitment of one semesters (up to one year).
Why You'll Love This Role
- Apply Generative AI to real business problems and see your work adopted by teams across the company.
- Get hands-on experience with large language models, prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and AI agents.
- Work alongside a collaborative team of data scientists and energy market experts who are passionate about mentoring the next generation of talent.
- Own projects from idea to deployment, and see the direct impact of your work on how people work every day.
- Build highly sought-after skills at the intersection of GenAI, data science, and energy markets.
- Be part of a team where curiosity, experimentation, and continuous learning are encouraged every day.
What You'll Do
Add Context & Interpretability to Our Tools
- Integrate GenAI into existing analytics tools and dashboards to explain model outputs, forecasts, and trends in plain language.
- Build features that summarize results, highlight key drivers, and flag anomalies so users understand not just *what* changed, but *why*.
Support Stakeholder Decision-Making
- Develop GenAI-powered assistants that help stakeholders quickly find, analyze, and interpret the information they need.
- Partner with business users to understand their decisions and design tools that surface the right insights at the right time.
Automate & Structure Our Processes
- Identify manual, repetitive, or unstructured workflows and use GenAI to automate or streamline them.
- Convert unstructured information (documents, reports, emails, notes) into structured, reusable data.
- Build reliable, repeatable pipelines and workflows that increase team efficiency.
Enable Knowledge Sharing Across Teams
- Build tools that capture, organize, and make institutional knowledge easy to search, such as internal Q&A assistants over documentation and methodologies.
- Help create and maintain documentation of workflows, models, and data sources to make knowledge accessible across the company.
Evaluate, Collaborate & Communicate
- Evaluate GenAI solutions for accuracy, reliability, and cost, and follow responsible-AI and data-security best practices.
- Stay current on the fast-moving GenAI landscape and bring new ideas to the team.
- Present findings and demos clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
What You'll Bring
Education
- Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field.
- Candidates pursuing a Master's degree are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Coursework in machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), or statistics is preferred.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in Python, including common data libraries (e.g., pandas, NumPy).
- Hands-on experience with large language models through coursework, projects, or prior internships (e.g., using LLM APIs, prompt engineering, building a chatbot or RAG application).
- Working knowledge of SQL and structured and unstructured data.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Bonus Points If You Have Experience With
- LLM frameworks such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, or similar
- Vector databases and embeddings
- AI agents and tool/function calling
- Evaluating LLM outputs (accuracy, hallucination, consistency)
- Cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
- Building simple web apps or dashboards (e.g., Streamlit, Dash, Power BI)
- Git and collaborative software development
- Energy markets or power systems
What Makes You Successful
We're looking for someone who is:
- Naturally curious and excited to experiment with new technology.
- Practical, focused on building solutions people actually use rather than demos.
- Comfortable taking ownership of projects from start to finish.
- Able to balance independent work with collaboration.
- An effective communicator who can explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical colleagues.
- Thoughtful about the limitations and responsible use of AI.
- Organized, proactive, and committed to delivering high-quality work.
