At Novonesis, we are pushing the boundaries of fermentation technology by developing next-generation control strategies that enable higher productivity, increased robustness, and improved sustainability. As a Fermentation Control intern, you will join our Fermentation and Recovery Development team in our Development and Optimization of Microbes organization that is responsible for the development, scale-up, and optimization of microbe products, processes, and technologies. Our teams are composed of scientists and researchers with diverse backgrounds that use a wide array of lab-, pilot-, and production-scale equipment, plus advanced data and digitalization tools, to develop and launch new products. We also collaborate with colleagues globally to take advantage of our combined knowledge in industrial microbiology.
About the Role
As a Fermentation Control Intern, you will work alongside Scientists and Research Associates to enhance fermentation performance, productivity, and process robustness, with a particular focus on Bacillus and yeast production processes. Specifically, you will implement and test a new fermentation control strategy on our bench and pilot fermentation systems while gaining experience with fermentation equipment and utilities, sensors, and programming strategies.
What you’ll Need to Be Successful
We are looking for students who are currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in:
- Chemical Engineering
- Biochemical Engineering
- Biological Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Or a related technical discipline
Required Qualifications and Competencies
- Minimum 3.0 GPA
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Interest in fermentation, process equipment, sensors, and programming controls
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work independently while contributing to team objectives
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Proficiency in basic mechanical equipment
- Sophomore standing or higher at the time of application
- Ability to arrange your own housing and transportation
- Any hands-on or classroom experience with advanced fermentation tools is a welcome bonus, but not required
Ways of Working / Working Conditions
- Full-time internship assignment lasting approximately 10 weeks
- Located on-site in Morrisville, NC
- Exposure to Research and Development, analytical equipment, fermentation equipment and controls
- Use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) when in the laboratory
- Collaboration with cross-functional teams in the areas of microbial physiology, advanced process control, data science and AI
Compensation
Expected salary: $23/hr
