About the role
HOW TO APPLY Austin Family Institute accepts applications for two and three semester practicum/internship placements for Spring, Summer and Fall semesters. Austin Family Institute will also occasionally accept students with non-traditional start dates if space in our Internship program permits. To apply for a placement in our Graduate Internship program, please email your cover letter and resume to apply@austinfamilyinstitute.org.
In addition, AFI requires three recommendation letters, one from a professor, one from a professional with whom have worked or interned, and a non-family member character reference. Recommenders can send letters via email to apply@austinfamilyinstitute.org. We will review completed applicant materials and schedule interviews, generally within 3 weeks of the application deadlines.
What makes AFI different? At AFI, you get more than just a simple hour of supervision and training. Our Graduate Associates receive at least two hours of hands on supervision per week, one hour in a group and one hour in an individual setting.
Our Associates supervisors are also available for additional consultation or support in the event of crisis. In addition to those two hours, you will receive one hour of family therapy education per week in our marriage and family therapy seminar in which we discuss relevant clinical issues from a systemic perspective. Finally, on the weeks we do not have an hour of MFT seminar, you will engage in a peer consultation learning group with your other associates.
With two locations in Austin, you will have access to diverse populations and clinical challenges. Finally, our commitment is to help train students to become effective, systemic clinicians. By the time you leave AFI, you will be empowered to be placed in almost any professional position you seek, from agency work to private practice.
