Intern - Electric Transmission Surveying Services

Job Summary

The Electric Transmission Surveying Services Intern position supports the team with land surveying and geospatial activities associated with transmission line, substation, and related infrastructure projects. Working under the direction and supervision of experienced survey personnel, the intern will gain practical experience applying academic knowledge to real-world surveying, mapping, and Electric Transmission project assignments.

The position assists with clearly defined tasks that may include researching internal survey records, deeds, easements, plats, right-of-way information, and existing project data; organizing and reviewing survey information; performing basic survey computations; preparing or updating maps, drawings, spreadsheets, databases, and other project documentation; and supporting limited CAD and GIS assignments. Depending on project needs and the student’s experience, the intern may also participate in supervised field activities and observe the collection, processing, and quality review of survey and geospatial data.

The intern will be introduced to conventional land surveying methods and technologies such as GPS/GNSS, reality capture, GIS, CAD, photogrammetry, LiDAR, remote sensing, and subsurface utility information. Assignments may provide exposure to boundary, topographic, route, right-of-way, construction staking, as-built, survey control, and aerial mapping activities supporting Electric Transmission projects.

The position collaborates with Survey Team members and may interact with engineering, project management, real estate, construction, forestry, and other internal stakeholders. The intern is expected to complete assigned work accurately and timely, communicate progress and questions, maintain organized project records, participate in team meetings and developmental activities, and follow all applicable company safety requirements, policies, procedures, standards, and information-handling expectations.

This internship is intended to provide meaningful, hands-on experience, professional development, mentorship, and a broader understanding of land surveying and geospatial services within the electric utility industry. The intern performs work under appropriate supervision and is not responsible for independently approving survey deliverables, directing contractors, making professional survey determinations, approving invoices, or serving as the responsible survey coordinator for a project.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

• Basic understanding of surveying, engineering, mapping, GIS, or related technical concepts gained through academic coursework, laboratory work or other relevant experience.
• Familiarity with CAD, GIS, GPS/GNSS, surveying equipment, data processing, or mapping software is beneficial but not required.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate questions, progress, and results clearly.
• Ability to learn and follow established technical procedures, safety requirements, company standards, and instructions.
• Basic analytical, mathematical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to organize information, maintain accurate records, manage assigned priorities, and complete defined tasks within established schedules.
• Basic proficiency with standard Microsoft Office applications.
• Commitment to safe work practices, accuracy, quality, integrity, and continuous learning.
• No directly related professional experience required.

Education Requirements

Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree, or an applicable technical credential, in Land Surveying, Surveying and Mapping, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Geospatial Science, or a related discipline.

Must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA or above.

Must be graduating in Spring 2028 or later.
