Job Summary

The Inventory Control Intern is a part-time, student-focused position that supports inventory accuracy throughout the University Campus Store. This role works as part of a small counting team to perform scheduled physical cycle counts, document results, and identify inventory discrepancies for review by the Campus Store inventory team.

Approximately 80% of the position will be dedicated to cycle counting. The remaining time will support count preparation, organization of results, discrepancy research, and related inventory-control projects. Through hands-on experience, the intern will gain exposure to retail inventory control, product data, inventory systems, and Campus Store operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform accurate physical cycle counts of merchandise throughout Campus Store locations using approved scanning tools and established inventory-control procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with the assigned Inventory Control Intern and an existing Campus Store team member during scheduled counts.
  • Maintain consistent, overlapping availability with the other Inventory Control Intern to support team-based counting.
  • Scan, count, verify, and document inventory quantities with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Follow established count plans, count schedules, and procedures to maintain the integrity of the inventory-counting process.
  • Recount and document inventory variances as directed.
  • Identify and report misplaced, damaged, incorrectly labeled, or potentially duplicate merchandise to the assigned inventory team member.
  • Assist with preparing merchandise areas and count plans for upcoming cycle counts.
  • Organize count results and supporting documentation for review and reconciliation.
  • Assist with basic discrepancy research and item-information review, as assigned.
  • Escalate inventory discrepancies, system issues, and other unresolved concerns to the appropriate inventory team member.
  • Follow all established procedures and do not make inventory adjustments or changes to item records without authorization.
  • Maintain an organized work area and handle merchandise carefully during the counting process.
  • Support occasional inventory, product-data, or retail operations projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a current University of Utah student.

Preferences

  • Current University of Utah student, preferably with an interest in business, retail operations, supply chain, inventory management, data, or a related field.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to perform repetitive work accurately.
  • Ability to work reliably with a partner and maintain a consistent schedule.
  • Comfortable using mobile devices, scanners, and basic computer applications.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures, stay organized, and communicate clearly with team members.
  • Prior retail, inventory, warehouse, data-entry, or product-data experience is helpful but not required.
  • Experience with NetSuite or another inventory-management system is preferred but not required.
