Mathematics Learning Assistant - Student Employment

Math Learning Assistants will support student learning in MATH 112, MATH 113, and MATH 135 by facilitating group work and active learning in class and holding drop-in tutoring hours. Through this role, students will strengthen the following competencies:

• Communication:Students build communication skills by practicing clear, respectful, and professional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication in a workplace setting.
• Leadership:Students build leadership skills by taking initiative, demonstrating responsibility, supporting others, contributing ideas, and modeling positive workplace behaviors.

Each learning assistant will be embedded in a section of MATH 112, MATH 113, or MATH 135 to support student learning in that class. Duties include:

• Attending the assigned class
• Facilitating group work and active learning
• Guiding students with problem-solving in class
• Leading the class for short periods agreed upon in advance
• Learning Assistants will not help with grading or the preparation of class
• materials.

Outside of their assigned class, Learning Assistants will be required to:

• Meet weekly with their assigned faculty member to discuss course content, plan for upcoming lessons, and reflect on previous activities.
• Attend a weekly pedagogy seminar focusing on the principles and techniques of active learning.
• Hold regular drop-in tutoring hours in the S102 Math Tutoring Center.

MUST BE A STUDENT AT SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY Must Include a Resume and Cover Letter Federal Work Study is NOT a requirement. Students who are Federal Work Study eligible may still apply for this position. Applicants must have earned a B or better in the course they would assist or have successfully completed MATH 201. Priority consideration will be given to applicants who are Math Secondary Education or Middle Level Math Education majors. The cover letter must include a list of all hours the applicant is available to work as well as which of MATH 112, MATH 113, and MATH 135 the applicant is willing to assist.
