Music Therapy Internship

Thank you so much for your interest in interning with us! Our internship is based out of beautiful Salt Lake City, Utah, and will help you grow into a truly exceptional therapist.

Currently our internship is AFFILIATED WITH Utah State University, St Mary of the Woods College, and Pacific University. If you attend a different University than those listed above, please reach out to ask about creating an affiliation.

Harmony Music Therapy seeks interns who are self-driven, introspective, self aware, open to feedback and able to apply it immediately. We require interns who are flexible and able to move with the ever-changing schedule and demands of a private practice. We require high levels of musicality from the get-go so that we can focus on developing clinical musicianship that will take your musical understanding, flexibility, and intuition to the next level.

Our internship involves a wide range of populations, so we require interns to begin with a wide range of repertoire and clinical foundations. We also need interns who are adaptable and able to move fluidly from one population to another throughout the day. For example, a single day may include 3-4 children’s trauma groups followed by a hospice session, a mental health group, and ending the day with a private client with Autism.

Harmony is a challenging and rewarding internship due to the diversity, caseload, and musicality requirements. This also means that our interns come out extremely well prepared for professional work. Interns will be well versed in a wide variety of populations and diverse clinical skills, which will open doors to thrive in a diverse caseload that will keep them growing throughout their career. Our interns may also discover passions they may have never known they had because they are exposed to a wide variety of populations.

CLINICAL HOURLY REQUIREMENTS

The intern will be full-time (40 hours per week) for 6-7 months to complete 1,200 hours of internship as required by the American Music Therapy Association. Adjustments to hours and length can be made for interns who need to have part time employment during internship.

CASELOAD

The intern will get the opportunity to work with several supervisors from Harmony Music Therapy to provide a well-rounded internship experience with a variety of settings. The intern will carry a caseload of roughly 15-20 direct client hours per week, depending on commute time, session type, and individual capacity. Interns will begin with an observation period in the beginning of the internship, and will work toward independence in the latter half of internship.

Harmony Music Therapy serves a vast variety of ages and diagnoses including:

• Children, teens and adults with disabilities
• Early Childhood groups
• Mental Health groups with children, teens and adults
• Adults with Traumatic Brain Injury
• Hospice

Harmony Music Therapy provides services in individual’s homes, schools, behavioral hospitals, preschool programs, therapy centers, and at our central clinic in Midvale, Utah. Harmony Music Therapy currently employs a team of Board-Certified Music Therapists, each with unique perspectives, training, and styles of music therapy.

Requirements for interns

• Repertoire and Proficiency: Interns are expected to have a repertoire of music that is age-appropriate for the wide range of ages served at Harmony Music Therapy. Solid guitar, piano, and voice proficiency is required. Please note that if an applicant does not have solid foundational music skills, they will be asked to take time to improve those skills before re-applying for the internship.
• Singing and Accompanying Ability: It is essential that the intern have the ability to sing both a capella and accompanied in an appropriate range for the clientele. Interns will be incorporating percussion instruments as well.
• Written and Verbal Skills: Strong written and verbal skills are essential for success in this internship environment.
• Reliable Transportation: Due to the mobility of the business, interns are required to have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel between sessions.
