About the job

Summary

At the New York Power Authority, you will be empowered to think big, do good, and transform the energy industry. We are a collaborative team of over 2,400 energy technologists, IT specialists, business experts, hydro engineers, and diverse professionals leading the energy revolution. With state-of-the-art technology, advanced research and development, a modernized infrastructure, and a focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG), we provide New Yorkers with low-cost, clean, reliable power — and we are well on the way to becoming the first end-to-end digital utility in the country.

The Operations Planning Developmental Intern will gain hands-on experience in the electric utility industry, focusing on power system operations, operations planning, and grid reliability. Working alongside experienced engineers, the intern will learn how utilities plan, analyze, and operate transmission and generation systems to ensure the reliable delivery of electricity.

Responsibilities may include supporting transmission system analysis, power system modeling, load flow studies, transmission outage coordination, and grid reliability assessments. The intern will also gain exposure to NERC reliability standards, renewable energy integration, emerging grid technologies, and process improvement initiatives involving analytical tools and automation.

This internship bridges academic engineering knowledge with real-world utility applications while developing technical, analytical, problem-solving, and professional communication skills. It provides valuable insight into electric grid planning and operations and helps prepare students for careers in the utility and energy industry

Our paid 10-week Summer Developmental Internship program runs from June 8th - August 13th, 2026. As an Intern, you will receive professional development, on-the job experience in the energy industry, exposure to executives, and networking opportunities to help build a solid foundation for your future career.

Applications will close on December 31st, 2026.
