About the role

About JLG, an Oshkosh company

JLG began in 1969, when our founder, John L. Grove set out to resolve growing safety concerns in the construction industry. Since then we have been committed to understanding the challenges and delivering innovative solutions to the access market. We partner with customers to provide quality equipment, training opportunities and trusted support within the access industry. We are a global company, and our products—including mobile elevating work platforms, telehandlers, utility vehicles and accessories—can be found all over the world.

As an R&D Engineering Intern with JLG, you will work alongside engineers and technicians in a hands-on research, development, and test environment supporting new and existing JLG products. This role provides exposure to the design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and modification of heavy equipment, vehicle systems, components, tooling, and test fixtures.

You will spend significant time in the R&D shop working directly with technicians to support prototype builds, test setups, fabrication, machining, welding, and troubleshooting. The ideal candidate enjoys working in a heavy manufacturing environment and is interested in combining engineering design and analysis with hands-on problem solving.

YOUR IMPACT

  • Support the design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and modification of vehicles, subsystems, components, tooling, fixtures, and test stands.
  • Work directly with R&D technicians and engineers to support prototype builds, test setups, equipment configuration changes, repairs, and troubleshooting.
  • Create and revise engineering drawings, component layouts, tooling, and fixtures using CAD software such as Creo Parametric.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and technical documentation to support shop activities.
  • Support CAM programming and other computer-based manufacturing applications used for machining, fabrication, and R&D shop equipment.
  • Assist with machining setups, tooling, welding, fabrication, and assembly activities while working closely with experienced technicians.
  • Perform engineering calculations and analysis to support component design, test setups, vehicle modifications, and problem resolution.
  • Assist with vehicle and component testing, including test setup, instrumentation, data collection, and evaluation of test results.
  • Support validation of new product designs as part of new product development and assist with troubleshooting and resolution of issues on existing products.
  • Develop practical solutions to shop and product challenges while considering safety, manufacturability, quality, cost, and performance.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, technicians, suppliers, and other cross-functional teams to support project objectives.
  • Follow applicable engineering procedures, safety requirements, standards, and specifications while working in the R&D shop and test environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or another related engineering field.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
  • Interest in working in a hands-on heavy manufacturing, fabrication, or R&D shop environment.

STANDOUT QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous internship, manufacturing, fabrication, machining, welding, or other hands-on technical experience.
  • Experience with or exposure to CAM software and CNC machining processes.
  • Experience using Creo Parametric, Pro/E, CATIA, SolidWorks, or a similar CAD system.
  • Understanding of machining, tooling, steel fabrication, sheet metal fabrication, and/or welding principles.
  • Experience with test instrumentation, data acquisition, vehicle testing, or component testing.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and an interest in working directly with technicians on equipment setups, tooling, fabrication, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with SAE teams, robotics, Formula SAE, Baja SAE, or other hands-on engineering activities.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment, construction equipment, automotive, agricultural equipment, or other heavy manufacturing industries.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
