Research Intern – Immunology & Molecular Biology
Cedars-Sinai · Los Angeles, CA
About the role
Description
The research laboratory studies immune-mediated mechanisms involved in atherosclerosis and cancer using in vivo models. This internship is designed for an undergraduate student seeking meaningful, hands-on research experience while developing a strong foundation in immunology, molecular biology, and cellular biology.
Working under the guidance of experienced laboratory team members, the Research Intern will gain exposure to the scientific research process, including experimental design, laboratory techniques, scientific literature review, data acquisition and analysis, and presentation of research findings.
Throughout the internship, the student will receive training in techniques that may include DNA extraction, PCR, electrophoresis, gel documentation, histological sectioning and staining, imaging and documentation of histological samples, data acquisition and analysis, flow cytometry sample preparation, RNA isolation, reverse transcription, quantitative real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry, and cell culture.
The internship is structured to progressively build the student’s scientific knowledge, technical proficiency, critical-thinking skills, and ability to communicate scientific findings.
Role Activities & Timeline
Month 1 – Scientific Foundations, Laboratory Practices & Safety The intern will receive an introduction to key scientific concepts relevant to the laboratory’s research, including the Cre-lox system used in certain mouse models, the purpose and application of various research models, and the scientific principles underlying techniques such as PCR, histology, RNA sequencing, flow cytometry, and phenotype analysis. Initial training will emphasize laboratory safety, responsible research practices, and foundational laboratory procedures.
Month 2 – Mentorship & Initial Hands-On Training The intern will be paired with an experienced laboratory team member and introduced to a research project. The intern will learn the project’s purpose, scientific aims, and broader relevance while beginning to assist with project activities.
The intern will also develop scientific literature-review skills by reading relevant research publications and discussing findings with laboratory team members. Hands-on training will begin with foundational skills such as pipetting and proper handling of laboratory reagents. The intern will complete a skills assessment to demonstrate proficiency in essential laboratory techniques before progressing to more advanced activities.
Months 3–6 – Technical Skill Development & Research Participation The intern will continue assisting with research projects while receiving training in progressively more advanced laboratory techniques. Training may include histological sectioning, immunohistochemistry, quantitative PCR, flow cytometry, and cell culture. The intern will also continue reviewing scientific literature relevant to the assigned research project and strengthening their understanding of experimental methods and research objectives.
Months 7–9 – Scientific Communication & Continued Research The intern will continue participating in laboratory research and developing technical proficiency. During this period, the intern will prepare and deliver a presentation summarizing the research activities they have supported, experimental findings, and the scientific significance of the work.
The intern will also lead a journal club discussion by selecting and presenting a scientific publication relevant to the research project. This experience is intended to strengthen the intern’s ability to critically evaluate scientific literature and clearly communicate complex scientific concepts.
Months 9–12 – Data Analysis & Final Presentation During the final phase of the internship, the intern will continue supporting research activities while gaining additional experience compiling, organizing, and analyzing experimental data.
At the conclusion of the internship, the intern will prepare and deliver a final presentation summarizing their research experience, experimental findings, and the significance of the work. The intern will also lead an additional journal club presentation, demonstrating continued development in scientific analysis, interpretation, and communication.
