Department Summary: MITRE’s Warfighting Software Systems Integration & Experimentation Department is seeking a Software Systems Engineering Intern in Omaha, Nebraska who is highly motivated, creative, and self-directed to help provide expertise and support to our sponsor and their mission. This position provides challenging opportunities to apply and expand one’s domain knowledge, creative problem-solving capabilities, software and systems engineering skills, and technical expertise. Roles & Responsibilities: Collaborate with teammates to learn, discuss, and solve complex software system engineering challenges Set up and maintain a development environment to support coding and testing activities Write, test, and debug code primarily in TypeScript and Python to implement software solutions Use GitLab for version control, including branching, merging, and submitting code reviews Demonstrate completed work to teammates and prepare presentations to share project outcomes with the broader organization Basic Qualifications: Sustained excellence in academic performance Must be a student enrolled full-time in an accredited degree-seeking program in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a related degree and continue to be enrolled full-time the semester following the internship.
Fundamental understanding of software development principles and practices Familiarity with version control systems, such as GitLab, for collaborative coding and code management Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment and present technical information clearly This position has an on-site requirement of 5 days per week on-site Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated interest in serving the public
Experience having applied computer science learning to an internship or research/lab position.
Experience with automated testing frameworks, including unit testing and API testing Familiarity with Cucumber or similar behavior-driven development (BDD) tools Knowledge of containerization technologies such as Docker for developing and deploying applications Clearance: In addition to passing MITRE’s employment background check, you may be submitted for a U.S. Government Security clearance. This is determined by the Department of Defense’s adjudicative guidelines for receiving a clearance, to include U.S. citizenship.
