Student Assistant - AARC Liberal Arts Tutor/Supplemental Instruction Leader

About the role

This is a student position responsible for preparing, marketing, and delivering study group sessions for a given course that covers content reviews and proven learning strategies to teach the students how to learn regardless of domain. The AARC SI Leader’s role is to reduce the repetition of courses for students, help students make their very best grades, and teach students how to learn. Reports to AARC Program Director.

QUALIFICATIONS Undergraduate student enrolled in at least six hours at SFA Minimum GPA of 2.8. Exceptions may be made to the GPA standard at the program director's discretion. A or B in the course for which tutor is tutoring or “equivalent experience” in lieu of a documented grade of A or B.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Attends all required training sessions and program meetings. Responds to communication requests by Program Director. Maintains schedule of two sessions per week.

Waits at least fifteen minutes for clients to show. Notifies Welcome Desk by phone or email if running late or need to cancel. Greets all clients as they enter the room.

Takes attendance using a QR code generated by our TC database. Prepares test prep materials that encourage interaction between students and reports those on the SI Plan doc before the session. Attends class to refresh notes and advertises the group.

Meets with the professor weekly even if only briefly to share how the group is going and to encourage their input. Teaches the “Teach It To The Duck” method of study (recall/ understanding check/ retrieval/ self-quizzing) for the purpose of the student learning to identify those areas that demand further study. NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESThe individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation. Knowledge of general office and clerical procedures and concepts. Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records and files.

Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public. Ability to understand and follow instructions. A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters.

To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester. Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
