Student Assistant - Service Provider (Notetaker/Reader)

This is a student position responsible for assisting in the operations and activities of a department or a departmental project, program, or function. Work is performed independently under supervision of Disability Services. QUALIFICATIONS The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F.

Austin State University. No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided.

Must have completed 12 college credit hours with overall 2.5 GPA. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Provides assigned disability services to support the mission of the department. Attends class with student and takes thorough, detailed notes.

May perform duties of test reader/scribe to include reading exams and marking answer sheets. May perform duties of lab scribe, assisting in laboratory environment and/or reading materials directly to student with a disability; Performs work within departmental and university guidelines, policies, and procedures. Works assigned schedule to meet departmental needs.

May work at varying locations across campus. NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Performs other related duties as assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESThe individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records and files. Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public. Ability to establish effective working relations with students with disabilities.

Ability to understand and follow instructions. Must be able to write very legibly. Must be able to take good, detailed notes.

Must be dependable and punctual. Must be patient and courteous. Must be able to maintain confidentiality.

Must be able to coordinate schedule with the personal and academic schedule of the student for whom services will be provided. A sample of timed note taking from a recorded lecture and a reading evaluation will be completed at screening.A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.

Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
