About the role

The Summer Associate Program is a 12-week internship program beginning in May 2027 and ending in August 2027. Students will work on impactful projects and meaningful work during their internship. To qualify for this position, applicants must be currently pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university and have an anticipated graduation date of December 2027 or later.

As part of Navy Federal's Military Affairs & Strategic Partnerships (MA&SP) department, GRPP collaborates closely with business units across the enterprise to assess policy implications, support strategic decision-making, and represent Navy Federal's interests before policymakers, regulators, trade associations, and other external stakeholders.

The Public Policy Assistant Summer Associate will support the team's policy research, reporting, and operational activities. The associate will help maintain legislative, regulatory, stakeholder engagement, and project-tracking efforts that support the team's advocacy and strategic priorities. Responsibilities may include data analysis, reporting, process improvement, policy research, and the development of materials that help inform decision-making and increase visibility into GRPP activities across the enterprise. This role will provide exposure to public policy, government relations, stakeholder engagement, and cross-functional collaboration.

Potential Projects Include:

  • Support the collection, organization, and analysis of data related to legislative, regulatory, advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and project activities.
  • Assist in preparing weekly, monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc reports, executive summaries, briefing materials, and presentations for senior leadership and internal stakeholders.
  • Develop dashboards, reports, and visualizations that provide insights into policy developments, advocacy activities, stakeholder engagement, and team performance metrics.
  • Support the tracking and management of team projects, action items, external engagements, and strategic initiatives to improve visibility and operational efficiency.
  • Conduct research on federal and state legislative proposals, regulatory actions, and emerging public policy issues affecting credit unions, financial services, and military-affiliated communities.
  • Perform industry benchmarking and trend analysis to support advocacy priorities and strategic planning efforts.
  • Assist with preparing background materials, stakeholder summaries, and briefing documents for meetings with policymakers, regulators, trade associations, and internal business partners.
  • Collaborate with business units across the enterprise to gather information and support policy-related initiatives and reporting.
  • Complete a capstone project focused on improving GRPP's reporting, knowledge management, or operational processes, resulting in recommendations and tools that create long-term value for the team.
  • Support the monitoring and tracking of legislative, regulatory, and public policy developments relevant to Navy Federal and the credit union industry.
  • Conduct research and gather information from legislative, regulatory, industry, and internal sources to support policy analysis and advocacy efforts.
  • Assist with maintaining records of team activities, stakeholder engagements, policy developments, and strategic initiatives.
  • Compile, organize, and analyze data to support team reporting, metrics, and leadership updates.
  • Prepare presentations, briefing materials, summaries, and reports for internal stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Support project management activities by tracking action items, milestones, and deliverables across multiple initiatives.
  • Collaborate with business units and internal partners to collect information and support cross-functional projects.
  • Help identify opportunities to improve team processes, reporting capabilities, and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in team meetings, stakeholder engagements, and professional development activities to gain exposure to government relations and public policy functions.
  • Pursuing a degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Government, Public Administration, Economics, Business, Communications, Law, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to research, gather, and organize information from a variety of sources.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated interest in public policy, government, financial services, advocacy, or related fields.

Desired Qualifications

  • Coursework or project experience in Public Policy, Political Science, Government, Public Administration, Economics, Business, Communications, or a related field.
  • Experience conducting research, analyzing information, or preparing reports and presentations through coursework, internships, student organizations, or other experiences.
  • Familiarity with data analysis, reporting, data visualization, or business intelligence concepts.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint to organize information and communicate findings.
  • Ability to synthesize complex information into concise summaries and recommendations.
  • Experience balancing multiple projects, priorities, or extracurricular commitments.
  • Interest in legislative affairs, regulatory issues, government relations, military affairs, consumer financial services, or the credit union industry.
  • Demonstrated leadership through student organizations, volunteer activities, community involvement, athletics, military service, or other experiences.
