Overview

Roanoke Cement Company is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Safety Intern to support the Safety team at our cement manufacturing facility in Troutville, Virginia.

This internship provides hands-on experience in industrial safety and regulatory compliance within a heavy manufacturing environment regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The intern will assist with safety inspections, training coordination, documentation, employee communications, and continuous improvement projects while gaining valuable exposure to cement plant operations.

This opportunity is designed for students interested in occupational safety, environmental health and safety, industrial management, or a related field who want practical experience in a manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

Safety Support

Help promote and maintain the plant's safety-first culture across all departments.

  • Participate in plant safety inspections, workplace observations, and facility walk-throughs.
  • Assist with identifying, documenting, and communicating potential workplace hazards.
  • Support the development and maintenance of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), safe work procedures, and related documentation.
  • Assist with preparing safety meetings, toolbox talks, and departmental safety communications.
  • Support safety campaigns, awareness initiatives, and employee recognition activities.
  • Help maintain records associated with safety inspections, audits, incidents, and corrective actions.
  • Assist with organizing and maintaining safety-related supplies and materials.

Training and Compliance

  • Assist with tracking required safety, MSHA, and compliance training.
  • Help coordinate training schedules and prepare materials for employee training sessions.
  • Support the maintenance of accurate and organized MSHA training records.
  • Assist with entering and reviewing data related to training, safety audits, observations, and compliance activities.
  • Help update safety policies, procedures, forms, and training materials.
  • Support preparation for internal and external safety inspections or audits.
  • Maintain safety records in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.

Continuous Improvement and Projects

Assist with projects focused on improving workplace safety, hazard awareness, and employee participation.

  • Help analyze basic safety metrics and trends to identify potential improvement opportunities.
  • Support the preparation of presentations, reports, safety alerts, and internal communications.
  • Participate in incident review and corrective-action tracking activities, as appropriate.
  • Assist with continuous improvement and safety culture initiatives throughout the facility.
  • Complete additional safety-related administrative and project assignments as directed by the Safety Manager.

Cross Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Safety, Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and other plant departments.
  • Participate in plant meetings and safety activities.
  • Gain exposure to the operational processes involved in cement manufacturing.
  • Communicate professionally with employees, supervisors, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Support plant-wide initiatives designed to improve safety performance and regulatory compliance.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge

  • Demonstrated interest in workplace safety, regulatory compliance, or industrial manufacturing.
  • Basic knowledge of occupational safety principles, hazard identification, or workplace compliance is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to collect, organize, and accurately maintain safety-related data and documentation.
  • Ability to learn and follow company policies, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements.

  • Ability to work in office and plant settings, including areas that may involve dust, noise, varying temperatures, heights, and moving equipment.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and comply with all plant safety requirements.
  • Ability to walk through operational areas and participate in plant inspections and safety observations.

Qualifications

Education

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the following fields:
  • Occupational Safety or Occupational Safety and Health
  • Environmental Health and Safety
  • Industrial Safety
  • Industrial Hygiene
  • Fire Science
  • Construction Management or Construction Safety
  • Safety Engineering or Industrial Engineering with a safety or EHS focus
  • Another closely related health and safety discipline
  • Bachelor's students entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year and students pursuing a master's degree are preferred.
