About the job

The WRM Program establishes water quality and drinking water standards, monitors the waters of the State to ensure surface and groundwater standards are met, helps ensure delivery of water that meets drinking water standards, and regulates discharges of wastewater and storm water to surface and ground water. The WRM Program also regulates and manages the diversion of water from surface and groundwaters to ensure protection of the resources and provides low-cost financial assistance for finance capital improvements to water infrastructure. The Program works to ensure adequate, reliable, sustainable supplies for current and future needs, uses, and the environment.

The intern would support NJDEP's research-driven update of the SRF Affordability Criteria, which determine how disadvantaged communities are identified for clean water and drinking water funding.

Duties include reviewing EPA best practices and case studies from other states, analyzing proposed socioeconomic metrics submitted by stakeholders, and performing an R-based scoring analysis of municipalities using selected metrics. This research would ensure that affordability scoring accurately reflects financial hardship, guide equitable funding decisions, and fulfill our stakeholder process commitments to local government units and other interested parties.
