Many universities and colleges close for up to six weeks for their winter break. Once you reconnect with friends and family, enjoy the holidays and relax, there will still be weeks left before the spring semester starts. After some well-deserved R&R, rather than get bored, why not spend your winter break developing valuable knowledge and skills in a winter internship?

While there are fewer winter internships available, don’t be deterred! Some companies need extra help over the holidays, and it might even be their peak season! There’s also less competition for open internship positions. Plus, you have options over the winter. You could pursue a winter internship back home or stay on campus and intern for a local company. You could also work for a company remotely over winter break.

During a winter internship, you won’t be in classes, can commit yourself 100% to your internship, and can make a strong impression on the employer. You’ll build your network, learn new software, learn about the company and industry, and observe the company culture. The intense training you receive, the skills you develop, and your expanded portfolio from your winter internship will set you apart from the competition when you’re looking for a spring or summer internship.

There’s a lot you can do to increase your odds of landing a competitive internship. Most importantly, start your internship search early! To land a winter internship, begin your search as early as September.

If you do a great job, you very well might be offered a spring or summer internship with the company or even a job when you graduate.  An internship will give you the chance to observe the company culture, and you’ll have a better idea if you want to pursue a career at the company or in the industry.
