About the role
Position Description
The Automation Engineering Co-Op supports plant and corporate manufacturing engineering teams by assisting with the design, scoping, testing, and implementation of automated manufacturing systems. This role offers hands-on experience in process automation, industrial robotics, control systems, and continuous improvement within a lean manufacturing framework.
Working under the guidance of experienced Mechatronics and Manufacturing Engineers, the Co-Op will contribute to active automation projects across manufacturing facilities. The position is structured to build technical expertise in machine controls, robotics, and process optimization while fostering collaborative, mentor-mentee learning relationships.
Key Responsibilities
- Automation Project Support: Assist with designing, scoping, launching, and validating automated equipment, robotic cells, and manufacturing technology packages.
- Controls & Robotics Exposure: Gain hands-on exposure to PLC programming, machine logic, industrial robotics (e.g., 6-axis, AGVs/AMRs), and sensor/vision system integration under technical mentorship.
- Data & Process Analysis: Support data collection, cycle time analysis, process planning, and troubleshooting to evaluate system performance and continuous improvement progress.
- Testing & Launch Assistance: Participate in prototype testing, trial runs, cell launch validation, and troubleshooting of computerized and automated machinery.
- Documentation & Standardization: Prepare and update technical documentation, standard work procedures, functional specifications, and engineering drawings.
- Lean & Continuous Improvement: Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, operationalized lean processes, safety audits, and structured coaching patterns (e.g., 5Q Kata).
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner effectively with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, quality, plant engineering, and operations leadership.
- Mentorship & Development: Engage actively in structured mentor-mentee relationships to develop practical engineering competencies aligned with academic studies.
Required Education & Qualifications
