Cabin Counselor

Cabin counselors are responsible for the social and emotional experience of their group of campers. Cabin counselors will live and sleep in the dorms, spend cabin time with the campers, supervise camper living habits, and guide the campers in their selection of activities. At mealtimes, counselors will sit at each table with 5-10 children. Counselors are involved in those activities where their teaching skills can be best utilized. On occasion, though, counselors may be asked to "assist" in activities in which they are not particularly experienced. However, they are not expected to be the Lead, but they assist and help with supervision. Cabin counselors are not required to have any background or education in marine science; however, an interest is encouraged.

Catalina Sea Camp is looking for summer staff ready to join us from May 27 through the first week of August! Our program welcomes campers ages 8–17, with sessions lasting one week or two and a half weeks. Please note your summer availability and the age groups you are interested in working with when applying for the counselor positions. You may apply to both; it will be two separate applications. Applications Open on October 1st and is a rolling application through the new year. You may not receive a full acceptance until Feb-Mar.

Minimum Qualifications

• Be at least two years older than the oldest camper age group (oldest campers = 17 years old)
• Have completed one full year of college or equivalent experience.
• Desire to live and work in a remote camp community.
• Desire to work with children and ability to supervise them in related activities.
• Have good character, integrity, flexibility and adaptability.
• Have enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience and self-control.
• Be able to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
• Have strong communication and human relations skills.
• Agree to a criminal background check.
• Be able and willing to treat all campers and staff fairly.
• Be accepting of GDI Inclusion Policy.

Physical Qualifications

• Must possess strength and endurance required to hike, swim, and move kayaks and equipment.
• Must have visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities.
• Able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).
• Able to follow, observe, and enforce all camp safety regulations.
• Have the ability to lift, carry, and move heavy objects when necessary.
• Be able to work in hot conditions, with temperatures up to 80-95 degrees while moving around camp.
