Job Overview & Responsibilities
As a Material and Process Engineering Intern at United Launch Alliance, you'll have the opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers and gain hands-on experience with launch vehicle parts, materials, and processes. Responsibilities for this role may include, but are not limited to:
- Supporting materials selection, characterization, and qualification of metallic, polymer, composite, and additively manufactured components
- Assisting in developing, reviewing, and improving material, process, and manufacturing specifications
- Support mechanical, metallurgical, chemical, environment, and/or materials testing as applicable
- Analyze test data and prepare technical reports, presentations, and engineering documentation
- Participate in material failure investigations and root-cause analysis
- Support evaluation of material properties, compatibility, degradation, and performance in demanding ground and launch system environments
- Assist with manufacturing process development, troubleshooting, and process improvement
- Work with engineering, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and technicians to resolve material and process issues
- Research industry standards, specifications, material properties, and technical literature
- Help develop and maintain engineering documentation, specifications, databases, and material and process requirements
- Participate in design reviews, technical meetings, laboratory activities, and hardware reviews
Interns may perform and/or participate in additional activities/events which help them build a strong network within the ULA community and with fellow interns!
Required Education
- At minimum completed Junior year of college or university by the time of the summer internship assignment.
- High School/GED
Basic Qualifications
- Must have a minimum college GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale at the time of application; cumulative, no rounding. NOTE: An unofficial transcript is required if you are invited for an interview. We recommend you upload it to your profile when you apply.
- Must have a valid driver's license and motorized vehicle transportation if assigned an internship in Alabama; California; Florida; or Pueblo, Colorado. For Denver, Colorado and Washington, DC, motorized transportation is recommended.
Role Specific Qualifications
- At minimum, actively pursuing a bachelor's degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) field from an accredited college or university.
- Desired degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
- Must have plans to be enrolled in classes during Fall Semester 2027.
- Ability to work full-time for a minimum of 10 weeks during the Summer of 2027.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work effectively both independently and part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint)
- Effective presentation, written communication, and verbal communication skills.
- Preferred experience with metallurgy, heat treatment, welding, brazing, additive manufacturing, composites, coatings, corrosion, adhesives, or polymeric materials
- Preferred experience familiarity with materials characterization and laboratory testing techniques
- Preferred experience familiarity with engineering drawings, material specifications, or industry standards
- Preferred experience with failure analysis, microscopy, mechanical testing, or other materials characterization techniques
- Preferred experience working with aerospace materials such as aluminum, titanium, nick-based superalloys, stainless steels, composites, or high-temperature materials
