Policy & Advocacy

Overview: Are you interested in learning more about the legislative process, advocacy, and environmental policymaking in Rhode Island? Our policy & advocacy intern will assist Save The Bay’s advocacy team with our legislative advocacy in a variety of ways, including: tracking bill introductions, reviewing legislation, attending legislative hearings at the RI State House, assisting the Director of Advocacy with research and public outreach, and other tasks. Hours can be flexible and include remote work with regular in-person check-ins.

Location:Save The Bay Center in Providence, RI and RI State House

Time Commitment:Approximately January to June, 10 hours/week. At least one day on-site during work hours (10am-3pm) in-person at our Providence office is preferred. Some remote work is available; ability to attend occasional evening legislative hearings at the RI State House or other public meetings is a plus.

Deadline:October 31. Rolling interviews/acceptance after this date, though priority will be given to applications received by the October 31 deadline. Decisions will be made by December 10, 2026.

Responsibilities & Learning Opportunities

• How the legislative process works in Rhode Island
• Assist with bill tracking, monitoring legislative hearings, testimony, and study commission meetings
• Review reports and statutes in other states on a variety of conservation issues
• Prepare summary documents or policy briefs for Director of Advocacy
• Attend internal staff meetings and external coalition meetings
• Assist with tabling, public outreach and grassroots engagement efforts

Qualifications

• Undergraduate juniors and seniors, recent graduates, graduate students
• Knowledge of environmental issues
• Interest in learning about environmental legislative advocacy
• Must be reliable, well organized and have good written and verbal communication skills
