About the job
MTC’s Artistic Office is the creative hub of the organization, responsible for programming upcoming seasons, shepherding new plays from development through every aspect of production, and maintaining supportive relationships with the writers, directors, actors, designers, and other artists who make up MTC’s artistic community. The Artistic Office Trainee plays an integral role on MTC’s Artistic Staff, contributing to the day-to-day operations of the office while gaining hands-on experience across a broad range of work. This position offers the unique opportunity to witness a show’s evolution from programming to pre-production to rehearsals and through its run.
The Trainee is responsible for compiling research to prepare the Artistic Director for meetings; attending select show-specific meetings and technical rehearsals with the Artistic Line Producer and assisting the ALP with many aspects of show-specific work, such as production calendar and research projects; creating some installments of MTC’s internal weekly “Friday Fact” series; assisting the Spring Gala Producer with the show portion of MTC’s largest annual fundraiser and supporting other institutional events by serving as a guest artist liaison; leading MTC’s involvement with regular “Working Title” director and designer mixers; the administration of three regular meetings; maintaining Artistic Office databases and assisting with archival projects; and providing additional administrative support. The Trainee will enjoy access to MTC’s art and operations, attending staff meetings, production meetings, and first rehearsals of MTC productions, plus opening nights, portions of Board meetings, and other special events. They will also attend MTC’s readings, workshop presentations, and previews, and contribute their thoughts as an active member of the Artistic Staff.
We are seeking a committed, detail-oriented, and resourceful emerging theatre professional with a genuine passion for learning how artistic administrators contribute to a major not-for-profit institution. Successful candidates are highly organized, intellectually curious, excellent communicators, and excited to dive into a wide variety of tasks with equal care and a great attitude. They are comfortable working both independently and collaboratively, and approach every aspect of the work—large and small—with genuine enthusiasm.
A familiarity with the landscape of theatre in New York City, and particularly with MTC’s mission and body of work, is a plus. Past Artistic Office Trainees have gone on to work at agencies, as independent commercial producers, as directors, in educational settings, and in staff positions in the artistic offices of many of our peer theatres.
